The Fruit That Started It All: The Limon de Rodrigues

Our founder's first encounter with the limon de Rodrigues, Rodrigues lime, set him on a path: Jean-Louis knew he wanted to elevate this citrus fruit of exceptional aroma, and to pay homage to its olfactory grace. This is the story of the fruit through the centuries. A crossing by sea. A soil that shaped it. And the traditional methods, still practiced today, that keep it exactly as it was found.

Citrus Aurantifolia: A Fruit Carried by the Sea

Limon de Rodrigues

Common name, limon de Rodrigues. Scientific name, Citrus aurantifolia. Like most citrus, it began in Asia, long before it reached Rodrigues. It travelled west, taking hold in Mexico and across the Americas, leaving its mark wherever it landed.

In Rodrigues, that mark runs deep. Limon confit. Limon aigre doux. Piment limon. Achard limon. Everyday condiments, built around this citrus, which recipes are passed down through generations.

How a lime from the other side of the world came to define an island in the middle of the Indian Ocean is a question with more than one answer. Accounts differ, as they tend to in the history of the Mascarene Islands. What most agree on is a ship, a settler, and an island that had never known citrus before. Some name the French explorer François Leguat, said to have brought the limon de Rodrigues ashore over three centuries ago.

A Fruit Named for Its Island

A Fruit Named for Its Island

Genetically, the limon de Rodrigues is no different from limes grown almost everywhere else. Yet, something sets it distinctly apart.

Perhaps it's already there, in the name. Limon de Rodrigues.

Three centuries growing wild, this wild lime has taken on a character shaped by soil and circumstance more than by breeding. Rodrigues' particular ground. A slow way of farming that works with nature rather than against it. Soil, climate, and the hands that tend it are what give the limon de Rodrigues its identity.

That rarity now sits at the center of an application for Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status: a formal recognition of the limon de Rodrigues' flavor, and of the history, the culture, and the know-how that shaped it.

Held in the Hands That Harvest It

Limon de Rodrigues

The limon de Rodrigues is one of the island's most important crops. Research led by our founder, Jean-Louis Roule, has traced more than 400 tonnes harvested each year, from over 700 trees, grown responsibly and tended by 260 farmers. More than 75% of that harvest is gathered by women. Further along the chain, the pattern holds: around 90% of the island's agri-processing businesses, most of them small, family-run operations, are also led by women.

Through our work with organizations like CIRAD, and through direct relationships with the farmers who supply our ingredients, we support the professionalization of limon cultivation. It's a way of growing economic opportunity while maintaining environmental protection sourcing sustainable perfume ingredients while staying faithful to the island's own methods.

"Developing the limon de Rodrigues industry means offering new economic opportunities to the people of Rodrigues"

- Jean-Louis Roule, Founder
